Live Under the Protection of the Most High

I memorized Psalm 91 recently. I wrote about this a long time ago on the blog

(Called ‘How to NOT Fear’) but today I want to write about it from my perspective

of something that my husband and I have recently gone through and how God

answered! This is a scripture that Satan used against Jesus, but of course he

twisted it and left out the first part. So, he tried to get Jesus to throw Himself off a

building in hopes that the angels would protect Him. but it says this: ‘Because

you have made the Lord – my refuge, the Most High-your dwelling place, no harm

will come to you; no plague will come near your tent. For he will give his angels

orders concerning you, to protect you in all your ways. They will support you with

their hands so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.’ (Psalm 91:8-10.)

If the Lord is your refuge, you won’t go and look for trouble. That’s called ‘testing’

Him, and its motivated by a lack of trust. Satan was trying to get Jesus to mistrust

the Father, and he tries to do that with us too.

At night when I wake up I speak psalm 91 over myself.

Nighttime is when the enemy loves to attack. It’s dark outside, and scary thoughts

might pop into your mind. At least, they do for me. Everything that could

possibly be bad in my life comes to my mind at night. But now, I have a weapon

and it’s the word of God. He promises protection to those who trust Him! He

promises that he Himself will rescue me from the ‘bird trap’! This has changed

how I pray. I have reminded God recently that we are caught in a bird trap: a

situation we found ourselves in through no sin or malice on our part, just a big

problem. And it seemed overwhelming. As we considered all the options to solve

it, they were awkward and time-consuming, and we didn’t have the luxury of

time. So, we prayed. We prayed Psalm 91. We prayed with each other, we prayed

with whoever came over. We prayed in text messages. And what did God do? At

just the right moment, on just the right day He answered this very specific prayer

in a very specific way! He delivered us from a problem that had multiple layers in

a most unlikely way. He solved it in a way we had not even considered, and He

solved all the layers on the same day. I’m still saying “wow” to God two days

later! But the best part, is that He showed me the truth of Psalm 91 while I was

thinking about it every day. He rescued us! Just like He said He would! I’m

convinced I need to watch less news about ‘what might happen if’ and read more

about ‘who God is and what God will do for those who trust Him no matter what

is going on in their lives’.

So, these are some of the promises of Psalm 91 that God has made real to me:

1-No more fear. I’m not saying I won’t feel fear, but I no longer dwell on the scary

thing in front of me, Instead, with the help of His word, I dwell on God. Who He is.

What He has already done. What He CAN do!

2-Protected by his faithfulness. ‘His faithfulness will be a protective shield’. (Ps

91:4b) I have been thinking about this a lot: this is a good place to remember the

things He has already done! And the more I remember what God has done for

me, the more I am confident that He will still take care of me.

3-Protected in all my ways. He knows my ways: I love that God is so personal,

that He is intimately aware of all my ways, the places I go every day, the things I

do, and has a desire to protect me in them.

4-Answers me when I call out to Him. this week, God has made it abundantly

clear that He heard my prayers and answered me. Keep calling out to Him! He

hears and He cares, and His timing is perfect. He can be trusted.

5-He rescues and gives honor. Not only does He rescue us from our troubles, but

He gives us honor! How generous of God! How kind! He wants to honor those

who humble themselves before Him and walk humbly with Him throughout their

lives.

6-He satisfies us with a long life and shows us His salvation. Not only did He

create us, but He set eternity in our hearts! So, we are ‘wired’ to desire to live: To

live forever! And that is what this whole Book is about: ‘keep yourselves in the

love of God waiting expectantly for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ for eternal

life.’ (Jude 21) Don’t miss it! ‘Whoever confesses that Jesus is the Son of God –

God remains in him and he in God.’ (I John 4:15)

Psalm 91 is exactly what the Israelites needed when they were going into the

Promised Land. Yes, there were scary tall people there, and yes, you might look

like a grasshopper to them,

but did you already forget what God did to free you

from slavery?

God loves to rescue those who believe that He can rescue them!

And He will keep doing it if we ‘remain’ in Him. so instead of focusing on our next

problem, what if we have a ‘paradigm shift’ and start remembering how God has

already delivered us? Memorize Psalm 91 with me and see what God is doing for

you too.
